After more than 20 years with IPMA, I have come to deeply understand the meaning, value, and challenges of volunteering.

IPMA is a not-for-profit organization that embodies its mission, operating dynamically and sustainably over the long term. While it may be relatively easy to organize an event or secure short-term support, maintaining consistent activity and influence without relying on substantial funding, power, or immediate recognition is a significant challenge. This enduring impact is made possible by the unwavering efforts of countless volunteers. The global recognition of project management’s value—and its positive impact on individuals and organizations—heavily depends on the dedication of those who contribute to IPMA and similar platforms.

IPMA unites exceptional theoretical and practical experts from the global project management community. Its members include distinguished professors from leading universities, leaders of national research and development units, civil servants with diverse responsibilities, engineers working tirelessly to meet deadlines, retirees sharing their wisdom, and young professionals in the prime of their careers.

On the IPMA platform, we all share a common role as project management volunteers. Together, we communicate as equals, exchanging knowledge and insights on addressing future societal challenges through effective project management.

As a non-profit organization, IPMA demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to social progress. Its events, including the annual Project Profession Forum, the Project Excellence Awards, the Research Conference, and certification programs, span industries and countries. These impactful initiatives are made possible through the efforts of dedicated volunteers from IPMA’s global community.

Through this platform, we dedicate our time and resources to developing project management talent, enhancing organizational competitiveness, and advancing industry disciplines. We also strive to highlight the societal value of project management. Purpose, dedication, and a shared commitment unite and define the competent volunteers who drive these efforts.

Looking ahead to the next 60 years, the social environment will likely become more complex, uncertain, and volatile. The knowledge, theories, tools, and skills required by project managers will evolve significantly. Collaboration across regions, cultures, and systems will increase in complexity as we work toward building a global community with a shared future.
