IPMA and ENGINEERS EUROPE Join Forces to Strengthen Skills Development in Engineering and Project Management
The International Project Management Association (IPMA) and ENGINEERS EUROPE have formalized their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking an important step in fostering collaboration between the project management and engineering professions. The agreement was signed during the 34th IPMA World Congress and IPMA’s 60th Anniversary Celebration in Berlin, Germany.
The MoU reflects the shared vision of both organizations to advance competence development, promote mutual recognition of professional qualifications, and strengthen the societal role of project managers and engineers at a time of profound green and digital transformations.
At the core of the agreement lies a strong focus on developing competences for both professions. ENGINEERS EUROPE and IPMA will cooperate to design and promote education and training opportunities that address the evolving needs of professionals in infrastructure, technology, sustainability, and leadership.
Key areas include:
- Cross-promotion of professional certifications, such as the EUR ING Certificate by ENGINEERS EUROPE and IPMA’s internationally recognized certifications, including the new Sustainable Project Management certification.
- Joint initiatives for competence development, supporting life-long learning pathways that integrate engineering excellence with project management skills.
- Exploration of integrated certification programs, particularly in sustainability, digitalization, and public-private collaboration models, all of which are critical to Europe’s competitiveness and resilience.
The MoU also establishes frameworks for cross-participation in major events, including the IPMA World Congress, Global Project Profession Forum, and ENGINEERS EUROPE’s technical forums. Both organizations will further explore joint engagement with European Union institutions and programmes such as Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, and the Digital Europe Programme, thereby aligning their efforts with EU policy priorities.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Mladen Vukomanović, President of IPMA, underlined the importance of the collaboration:
“Project managers and engineers shape the world together. By joining forces, we can elevate competence development and create new opportunities for both professions to contribute to sustainable and innovative solutions globally.”
Dirk G. Bochar, Secretary General of ENGINEERS EUROPE, emphasized the alignment of objectives:
“This partnership will allow us to build stronger bridges between engineering and project management, empowering professionals with the skills and recognition they need to succeed in a rapidly changing environment.”
