Celebrating our Profession
In most of the countries today “labour day” is being celebrated on May 1st. It´s an annual holiday to celebrate achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement. In many villages in Germany, a “maypole” will be erected tonight. This tradition can be traced back in the early 15th Century in Bavaria. There are many rites around that pole, but one is remarkable in Germany, as the local guilds are represented with a sign on the pole. They celebrate their profession and their contribution to society.
What do we do to celebrate our profession? Project managers contribute significantly to the economy and the society at large. In some countries already more than one third of the GDP is being created through projects. Millions of project managers execute projects in various sectors but are lacking the recognition they deserve. Let´s celebrate today the professions, including project management, and find other ways of getting a spot on the achievements of project managers. IPMA is doing this through its Awards, the Project Excellence Awards and the Achievement Awards.

Reinhard Wagner has been active for more than 30 years in the field of project- related leadership, in such diverse sectors as Air Defense, Automotive Engineering, and Machinery, as well as various not-for-profit organizations. As a Certified Projects Director (IPMA Level A), he has proven experience in managing projects, programmes and project portfolios in complex and dynamic contexts. He is also an IPMA Certified Programme and Portfolio Management Consultant, and as such supports senior executives in developing and improving their organizational competence in managing projects. For more than 15 years, he has been actively involved in the development of project, programme and portfolio management standards, for example as Convenor of the ISO 21500 “Guidance on Project Management” and the ISO 21503 “Guidance on Programme Management”. Reinhard Wagner is Past President of IPMA and Chairman of the Council, Honorary Chairman of GPM (the German Project Management Association), as well as Managing Director of Tiba Managementberatung GmbH.
